The Little-Known Facts about the Human Diet
The basic idea with paleo eating and health is to provide your body with optimal food and nutrition, the very best food that your body can easily digest and utilize for all its important processes.
The paleo diet is the way nature intended us to eat – it’s the food that your body was made for. During our human evolution here on earth, our bodies adapted to use the food that was available in our surrounding in the best possible way.
That means that your body is designed to eat certain food items, while other (often more recent) food items are bad for the body. In other words, the human body has not yet adjusted to take advantage of modern food.
The paleo diet (or Paleolithic diet, also referred to as the caveman diet, stone age diet, and hunter-gatherer diet) is the current way of eating as we did during the Paleolithic era, a period of about 2.5 million years duration that ended around 10,000 years ago with the development of agriculture.
Why the Modern Day Diet Can’t Give You a Lean Body – And What to Do About It
When humans started to range cattle and grow their own food, new food items were introduced to the diet, for example, milk and other dairy products, grains, legumes, and refined sugar. However, our genetics did not keep up with this rapid change in diet, and over time we became overweight which caused several health conditions to develop.
When eating “modern” food to which your body has never adjusted, you risk gaining weight. You also risk a lot of health problems like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.
The human race is still genetically adapted to the diet of our Paleolithic ancestors, and the food that most resembles this diet is optimal for our health.
When studying archeological findings and modern-day hunter-gatherers, researchers discovered that these populations did not suffer from being overweight. They did not show any evidence of suffering from many of our modern-day diseases either, like high blood pressure, stroke, ischemic heart disease and diabetes.
New research has shown that when eating a paleo diet the following happens: you lose weight, you have a slimmer waist, your blood pressure is lowered, and your risk of stroke and/or heart attack is reduced.
You should strive to eat a diet that resembles a pre-agricultural diet – one based on commonly available food. You should include meat, fish, egg, vegetables, fruit, roots and nuts, and you should avoid dairy products, cheese, grains, legumes, refined sugar. Also, cut back on salt.
